Summer Safety for Your Pets

Summer starts in just a few days, and the hot weather is here to stay! Sitters for Critters wants to remind you to stay safe while you and your pets enjoy fun in the sun. Just a friendly reminder to keep up to date with your pets flea, tick, and heart worm prevention. Be sure to call your Veterinarian and ask for vet records.  There are flea and tick preventives that can also prevent mosquito bites.  We recommend First Shield Trio. Summer is meant to be a very rewarding time with your family and pets!  Here are some do’s and don’ts for the hot summer months.  If you have any questions at all, please contact your bucks county dog walker or sitters!

Summer Safety for Your Pets

Do:
– Exercise and walk your dog in the early morning or after sunset, avoiding the hottest hours of the day.
– Give your dog access to plenty of fresh water at all times.
– Take your long-haired dog to the groomer for a cool summer haircut (1 inch long is recommended- cool, but still protects against the sun).
– Seek veterinary care immediately if you think your dog might have heatstroke (excessive panting, collapsing, unconsciousness, vomiting, and unresponsiveness are all signs). Better safe than sorry!
– Be extra cautious with brachycephalic breeds (dogs with flat faces and short noses)- including pugs and bulldogs, older dogs, and puppies, as they are most prone to overheating.

Don’t:
– Leave your dog alone in a parked car (even with the windows cracked).
– Walk your dog on hot pavement (if it burns your hand, it can burn your pup’s paws!).
– Leave your dog unattended outside for extended periods of time or at all if there isn’t sufficient shade.

When you’re choosing the best travel kennel you should consider: measure your dog from snout to tail.

Here’s to a happy and healthy summer!
